THE CRANLANA PROGRAMME

The Colloquium

People in responsible positions are increasingly called upon to make decisions in complex environments. These often involve competing perspectives and seemingly incompatible values. Through its various activities, The Colloquium provides a forum for discussion of the theory and practice of responsible leadership, with the objective of enhancing the capacity of people in government, education, the arts and the private and public sectors to exercise ethical and effective judgement at all levels.

Definition: The Colloquium - Cultivating Wisdom in Leadership

The Colloquium challenges assumptions, expands thinking and refines leadership capability.

The Colloquium is the central activity of The Cranlana Programme. It is a week-long seminar offered on a number of occasions each year to groups of approximately 20 participants, drawn from the public, private and not-for-profit sectors.

A number of fundamental questions underlie each Colloquium. The issues they raise are critical to the theory and practice of good leadership.

Objectives of The Colloquium

The objectives of the Colloquium are to:

  • reflect on the nature of leadership and the societal, organisational and personal values that determine actions
  • strengthen participants’ capacity to exercise informed, ethical and strategic judgement
  • develop further knowledge about the intersection of the private, government and community sectors and the tensions and trade-offs therein between liberty, equality, prosperity, community and a sustainable society
  • enhance analytical and decision-making ability
  • deepen understanding about the shaping and formulation of public and corporate policy
  • strengthen capacity to manage positive change

The Colloquium enables participants to define and understand the principles that lie at the heart of leadership and decision-making. They leave better able to think through issues, to integrate new and different perspectives and to communicate with and motivate people.

Methodology

A number of fundamental questions underlie each Colloquium.  The issues they raise are critical to the theory and practice of good leadership.

The Colloquium is designed to encourage participants to think about thinking.  As with all seminars conducted by The Cranlana Programme, the methodology used is one of shared inquiry.  With the help of skilled moderators, participants engage in roundtable discussions based upon important and complex ideas presented within a set of selected readings.  These provide an area of common ground on which participants are encouraged to structure and expand their thinking.

The Colloquium methodology is a disciplined process specifically structured to enable participants to test their thinking against complex frameworks.  It is also a process of creative exploration, purposefully structured to stimulate adaptive and new thinking.  Participants come from diverse backgrounds and bring a broad range of professional skills and personal abilities to the discussions.
