Participants are challenged to consider alternative views, to practice the skills of practical reasoning and respectful debate, and to learn the value of considered reading and informed reflection in dealing with complex social, political and economic issues.

Symposia
A Symposium is a two or three day seminar designed to foster dialogue, enhance understanding and provide opportunities for creative thinking around issues of importance within Australian society.
Symposia largely draw upon key Colloquium themes and include such topics and issues as:
- Justice & Society
- Business, Ethics & Society
- The Value of Democracy: Building Public Trust in Society's Institutions
- Power & Ethics
- Year 12 Leadership Symposia
- Knowledge, Power & Justice
Symposia use the methodology of moderated discussion around a set of selected texts, but adopt a variety of formats and allow more time for discussion of specific areas of concern.
Participants are usually people with senior responsibility from sectors involved in the topic addressed by the seminar.
Symposia are moderated by acknowledged experts and in some instances held in collaboration with other organisations.
Policy Seminars
The purpose of the Policy Seminars is to convene leaders and experts in particular fields to explore and analyse new models and options and draw recommendations around issues of long-range importance.
The Policy Seminars use the same methodology as other Cranlana Programme seminars. Participants in these seminars focus on the values and principles that underpin consideration of particular issues, in addition to ideas and recommendations presented in a set of specifically commissioned discussion papers.
Discussions at the Policy Seminars, and the recommendations therein, are published as Cranlana Occasional Papers. These papers are circulated nationally to selected organisations and personnel.
Policy Seminars are moderated by acknowledged experts and in some instances held in collaboration with, or sponsored by, other organisations.
In recent years Policy Seminars have addressed a range of topics, including:
- Local Government, Leadership and Community Strengthening - sponsored by the Municipal Association of Victoria and developed in consultation with representatives from Victoria University, the Municipal Association of Victoria and the Department for Victorian Communities. Local Government Discussion Paper (pdf file)
- Pathways for Reconciliation - sponsored by Department of Premier and Cabinet Victoria, Department for Victorian Communities, Rio Tinto Aboriginal Foundation, Wesfarmers Ltd and Westpac Banking Corporation
- 2020: A Vision for Aged Care in Australia - sponsored by The Myer Foundation
